MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK) - The Downtown Optimist Club held a meeting Tuesday afternoon in Meridian. The guest speaker represented the Shriners Hospital for Children facility in Shreveport and the presentation was about what the hospital does. The goal of the hospital is to help children who have skeletal diseases, deformities or injuries. They rely on community support and is grateful for all the donations they receive.
"The local Shriners, our calling is to make sure that the patients get transported to the hospitals, ." says Grover Vining from the facility in Shreveport. "So the funds that we raise here locally, pretty much stay here and help us run our organizations and help us make sure that the patients get there.”
There are 22 Shriners Hospital in North America and the facility in Shreveport serves children in Mississippi and Alabama along with several other states and the Republic of Panama.
