MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK) - The three day weekend is here and that means an increase of traffic on the roads.

The Mississippi Highway Patrol will begin their increase in patrols this evening for the busy travel period. Gas prices are higher than usual this weekend due to Hurricane Harvey. Sergeant Andy West says we will also see an increase in traffic due to recovery efforts.

"In 2015, there were 460 fatal car crashes in the united states over the labor day holiday period. Of those, 40 percent involved alcohol related crashed," West says.

The official Labor Day holiday travel period began August 30 and ends Tuesday, September 5th.
