American Cancer Society Recognizes Partners, Volunteers

The American Cancer Society Delta Central Mississippi 2010 Recognition Picnic was held Tuesday evening at Union Station for the many volunteers who work hard throughout the year to raise money and awareness.

The opening speaker was cancer survivor Grady Hinson who thanked the group for its work and urged everyone to reach out to those fighting cancer.

“We need for you to talk to us. Let us know that you are doing what you can to fight cancer and let us know that you are pulling for us. As survivors, we need to hear from our families, friends and co workers,” said Hinson.

Officials say the work of volunteers throughout the year goes a long way in making a difference.

"The volunteers here are just wonderful advocates for the American Cancer Society," said Robert Morris, vice-president of ACS Health Initiatives. "They just do anything they can, because they believe in what we do. And we just want to tell them thank you for what they do."

Morris announced a new program, CPS 3,which will be a part of Relay for Life in Meridian May 7, 2011. This is a research project that follows volunteers for three years regarding their health indicators.

"We have lots of people from all walks of life helping us, trying to help us rid this dreadful disease," said Allison Tyler, state ACS vice-president.

Several awards were also handed out to the volunteers.
Outstanding corporate recognition was given to Great Southern National Bank, A & B Electric, Mississippi Power, La-Z-Boy, Esco and Jarden.

Tyson Foods in Scott County was congratulated for raising $43,000 and being the Top Fundraising Team.

Rush Health Systems was congratulated for being the Outstanding Relay for Life Team.

The Cancer Resource Center, a collaboration between the American Cancer Society and Anderson Regional Cancer Center, was recognized as the first in Mississippi and a model for the other states in the Mid-South.
