There's a new discount drug card available and Mississippi residents are eligible.
It's called the Mississippi Prescription Drug Card Program and all Mississippi residents qualify, whether you have insurance or not.
According to mississippidrugcard.com, you may receive savings of up to 75% at more than 50,000 national regional, and independent pharmacies. This program is sponsored by FreeDrugCard.us and the United Networks of America. According to the Web site, Fred's Pharmacy, Rite Aid, Walgreens, Winn-Dixie, K-Mart, as well as thousands of independent pharmacies, participate.
Fred's pharmacist, Bobby Boyd, said this is a fairly new program for the state. He said the Mississippi Prescription Drug Card is one of many discount cards, but the difference is this drug card is so easily accessible via the Internet and you can save money on eyeglasses, teeth whitening and dental plans.
"The benefits would be for anyone that doesn't have a drug card, can just simply go to the Internet or download a card, or either they can come here and we would be glad to do that for them," said Boyd. "And it does guarantee them a low discounted price on their medication."
Boyd says this discount card will not beat regular insurance. But people without insurance can see huge savings.
"Even someone that has a Medicaid card that falls into the gap during the course of the year. They can use the card, too."
Hundreds of medications are on the drug list, both brand names and generic brands.
