Winn-Dixie Stores said Monday it is voluntarily taking off its shelves tomatoes which the Food and Drug Administration has warned should not be eaten.

Saturday the agency said a salmonellosis outbreak was linked to certain varieties of raw tomatoes including red plum, red Roma and red round.

Salmonellosis is a bacterial infection that can cause fever, nausea and abdominal pain. There have been 145 reported cases of salmonellosis since mid-April, including at least 23 hospitalizations.

The FDA said consumers may continue to eat cherry tomatoes, grape tomatoes, and tomatoes sold with the vine still attached.

Also, consumers may continue to consume tomatoes grown in Arkansas, California, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Belgium, Canada, Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Israel.
