Starting this summer, a Mississippi law will lower the age at which people can start giving blood. The minimum age was 17.

But Gov. Haley Barbour signed a bill Friday that says the voluntary blood donations can begin at 16. The bill becomes law July 1.

A minor who wants to donate blood still needs written permission from a parent or guardian.
