Health officials have confirmed at least 27 cases of swine flu in Alabama and probable cases have been found in 28 other people.
The Alabama Department of Public Health said Thursday it has also received certification from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta to perform its own confirmations.
Of the 55 probable and confirmed cases, 32 are from Madison County, seven are from Jefferson County, six were in Montgomery County, three were found in Limestone County, Pike and Mobile counties each had two cases and Shelby, Calhoun and Etowah counties had one case each.
More than half of the of the cases are from children under the age of 13 and the state lab has received more than 1,500 samples for testing.
