The leader of the Mississippi Hospital Association says it appears the Division of Medicaid will cease to exist after June 30.
President and CEO Sam Cameron said that's what will happen because Gov. Haley Barbour refuses to call a special session of the legislature to finalize the state budget.
In a written statement, Cameron said "while most legal experts agree the governor can run the agency without reenactment of the Division, they also agree the legislature cannot appropriate funds to an agency that does not exist."
Cameron said any payments to Medicaid staff or vendors after July 1 would be considered illegal gratuities, leaving the governor with no staff to run the program.
The MHA president said many hospitals and other health care providers have already informed their vendors they will not be paid until the providers are reimbursed by the Division of Medicaid.

While I do agree that Medicaid is something our senior citizens need to supplement (soon to be bankrupt) Medicare, I know with certainty that Medicaid is too often provided for citizens that have no financial need, but CHOOSE not to work. My suggestion is quit paying for young ladies to have multiple babies with Medicaid money. Make them reimburse the Medicaid system by working in govmt daycare facilities, housing authority, etc. I bet having to ___________ and work might deter some of those from having children in the first place! Then, Medicaid might actually work the way it was intended... It's sad so many people get away with abusing the system with no consequences.
This is a shame, Medicaid is not only for the poor, it is a supplement for elderly along with medicare and for them the 20% it does cover for medical care is alot. I hope he understands that this decision will affect alot of needy seniors who already have a hard time paying for medications, medical equipment and any other medical expense. This is just a bad decision and this crucial time. Our seniors are suffering enough with the high cost of medical needs. Must they suffer more.
GO HALEY, DON'T LET THESE TAX AND SPEND DEM'S HAVE THERE WAY WITH OUR TAX MONEY.
