United Blood Services has issued an urgent appeal for type AB donors.
Specifically, the agency needs plasma from those with this rare blood type, because it can be used by anyone needing plasma, regardless of their blood type. However, only five percent of the population is type AB.
"We have a lot of patients in the hospital that need plasma for various reasons, such as if they have a chronic disease or even trauma patients or those patients that are undergoing plasma exchanges," said heather Knight, marketing director. "So those AB donors are very important."
Knight says the Meridian center needs at least four AB plasma units per week to meet its needs continually. Plasma can be stored for up to a year.
