Now Time to Avoid Mosquitoes

The Mississippi Department of Health says the number of West Nile virus cases statewide is now up to twenty. Two people have died.

As the number of cases go up, that makes the job of getting rid of mosquitoes all the more important.

Meridian, like many cities across the state, sprays for mosquitoes every night during this time of year, which is the peak time for mosquitoes.

"The effectiveness is hard to say," said public works director, Monty Jackson. "We don't have any way to say how many mosquitoes, but this product is supposed to be used to kill the mosquitoes."

There have been no reported cases of WNV in east Mississippi.

Here are a few tips for getting rid of mosquitoes around your home:

Eliminate standing water, a prime breeding place for mosquitoes.
Wear light clothing that covers as much of your body as possible when
you're outside.
Use insect repellent with Deet in it over the parts that aren't covered.
