Rural Areas Go Days Without Water Service

Customers of North Choctaw Water Authority have had problems for several days with their water service.

It's attributed to sub-freezing temperatures in the past week.

An official says the most recent problem is a main line in Yantley that broke Saturday.

An additional crew was added Monday to try to get the repair finished by Monday or Tuesday morning.

North Choctaw serves about 3,500 people.

Customers in the Dalewood and Toomsuba areas of Lauderdale County have also reported they have been without water service for several days.

Toomsuba Water System says it has been working around the clock to thaw frozen filter banks in the treatment plant. It reported Tuesday that progress is being made.

However, TWS says until the plant thaws, residents are encouraged to conserve as much water as possible.

TWS has also issued a boil water notice for all customers, effective through Jan. 25, because of the problems. That applies to those who have their water service back now and for others when it is restored.

"We just got the third well up this morning, well about one 1:00, and we're trying to get the tanks filled back up so we'll have some pressure," said Billy Barrett of Toomsuba Water Association Tuesday afternoon.

TWS said all questions should be directed to 601-632-4366. The time frame for all customers being restored is unknown but TWS is offering a free case of bottled water to its customers who are affected.

First off the water association does its best to communicate with its customers, we notify T.V., radio and newspaper with notices of boil water, there are many times that we work twenty four hours just to make sure we have water. Needless to say that when its off its off, the reason for it being off is not a issue, and if possible we try to give a time frame when it comes back on if we can. We cant change pipes breaking or the weather, but we do work around the clock trying to fix issues, I live on this water system as well and have to deal with outages like the next, the recent temptures kept us working four days straight with little or no sleep, little food, and freezing temps and all we ask is for a little patience and understanding. As far as the problems we had this time, there isnt enough lines that we could write to explain what we had to break just know that somewhere there was someone giving all they had to get it fixed and the result was that we now have water.

Toomsuba Water is constantly having issues with water outages. They fail to communicate the problem with the customers, then get ugly when you call to get an answer. Due to water outages they force people to spend lots of money on bottled water without offering any help or supply water. Unfortunately, they are the only option. This is customer service at its worse.

trying 5 to 6 days. You call and ask questions they have such nasty attitudes. They also say water will be on sometime todaythen you go through the afternoon, night and next morning. I really think the water system needs to invest in new pumps etc. because when it's time to pay your bill you are not getting any adjustments you pay $10.00 for late fees and $75.00 for reconnect fees. I think certain areas is specialized for certain customers to received water first, we need better personalities working in a public environment, and board members that can be reach for complaints.
