The total donated so far to the Anderson Cancer Center Patient Benevolence Fund as a result of John & Friends Run for Cancer is $8,500.
"There are so many people that we can treat because of this," said Ginny Ruffin, an oncology social worker at Anderson Cancer Center.
Ruffin meets with the patients, and ultimately finds ways to financially help them get through treatment. She knows how much this means to them.
"This will mean that we have patients that will actually be able to pay for their gas, pay for their pain medicine, who otherwise would not be able to do so," Ruffin said. "Patients who will be able to purchase prosthesis who couldn't."
"When you see a cancer patient that can't afford pain medication, or at times, the regular medication, or can't even afford to get here, and because of what you guys have done, those folks will be able to get help," said Dr. Joe Anderson, board chairman of the center and hospital chaplain. "I can't thank you enough on behalf of the patients and the hospital."
For the staff at the cancer center, one of the most exciting things is how John & Friends Run for Cancer has grown through the years. It started out bringing in a couple thousand dollars for cancer patients. This year, they say so many more people will be able to be helped because of it.
"Those cancer patients that we see every day, those are the ones that are going through the real marathon, and that is why you guys did it," said Wayne Herrington, administrative director for Anderson Cancer Center. "And that is why we are here. The benevolence fund, it just helps them to get through that next mile."
"The community response to this has been overwhelming to us and that is leadership on your part, of WTOK and the team, you have and it just shows how the community reaches out to neighbors," said Ray Humphreys, CEO of Anderson Regional Medical Center.
Because of your generosity, more patients will be helped this year.
