Meridian, Miss. Local men, women, and children came together on Saturday morning as heroes.
The Walk for Diabetes at Bonita Lakes in Meridian brought in about 200 volunteers. While the Diabetes Foundation of Mississippi has had many walks in the past, organizers say this was its first 5-k. This year's theme was "We Can Be Heroes."
One team of students came out to surprise a diabetic classmate by walking in her honor. The foundation says it is supporters like that who show what the run is all about, being a hero.
"It's a way to honor people with diabetes," according to Irena McClain with Walk for Diabetes. "If you think about all the things, all the life management skills people with diabetes have to do every day just to stay alive and stay in good health, parents have to do for their children, it's a lot. It's like a second job."
McClain says the money raised during Saturday's walk will stay in the area to support diabetes research in Mississippi.
Newscenter 11's Deana Day served as Honorary Chair of the Walk for Diabetes.
