Over 100 people showed up Sunday for a conference in Meridian held by the Mississippi Kidney Foundation.
The foundation holds conferences all over the state for patients with kidney disease and their caregivers. The goal is to help those patients learn how to provide better care for themselves. They brought in a full team with dieticians, nurses, social workers and even a motivational speaker. The executive director of the foundation says their conferences are important because kidney disease is a problem that hits hard in Mississippi.
"At least in Mississippi, we have one of the highest rates of kidney disease because of high blood pressure and diabetes," said executive director Gail Sweat. "So these patients are here to learn more about how they can help take care of themselves."
The foundation often holds free screenings across the state. If you or a loved one suffers from kidney disease, you can call 1-800-232-1592 to find out when the next free screening will be.
