You may join the movement for more birthdays and the fight against cancer by participating in a new research study called the Cancer Prevention Study-3, or CPS-3.

Lauderdale County's Relay for Life is the only relay in Mississippi chosen to participate in this study, for several reasons.

"The outpouring from the businesses, the churches, the schools, all of the organizations has to do with why we were selected," said the American Cancer Society's Linda Todd. "Also, we have a highly respected medical community and we have a highly respected cancer center."

The American Cancer Society is behind this study. Its goal is to help understand how to prevent cancer.

What you can do to help with this study is sign up at Friday's Relay for Life. It begins at 7 p.m. at the Northeast Recreational Complex. Enrolling in the survey is a two-part process.

"First, it is just a demographic survey," Todd said. "You'll have a waist circumference measurement. Then they will explain how you will fill out your surveys that will be coming in the future. Then, you'll have some lab work drawn."

The second step takes place at home. If you enroll, you will participate in this study by filling out surveys every two years. The at-home surveys will ask for information on lifestyle, behavior, and other factors related to your health.

"All these different things that they will be looking at through the questionnaire are instrumental in helping us find out how to prevent bad things from happening to us," said Todd.

The American Cancer Society is hoping to have 227 participants from Lauderdale County enroll in CPS-3.
