This is the 10th year that The Radio People have sponsored the Mississippi Miracles Radiothon. Over those ten years, the donations from people in this area have gone on to fund some amazing things at the Blair E. Batson Children's Hospital in Jackson.
"What the people have been able to accomplish over the last ten years with their donations has been replacing out old equipment at the Blair E. Batson Hospital, expanding hospital wings at the hospital," said Scott Stevens, operations manager for The Radio people. "Hospital areas that did have six or seven rooms are now getting expanded to over 25 rooms."
Blair E. Batson Hospital is located in Jackson but it is for all Mississippi children who need medical help.
John Clark Packer represents the hospital as its Miracle Network coordinator and as a previous patient.
"They didn't think I was going to make it," said Packer. "But here I am thirty years later, still kicking. I credit all of that to the hospital and to their staff. They really all become part of your family when you are there for a long period of time like I was."
The radiothon isn't just about asking for donations. It also gives the patients from Blair E. Batson a chance to tell their stories.
One mother spoke to the radio People's audience via Internet about her 18-year-old son's experience.
"Throughout this nightmare, the one thing I haven't regretted is going to get my son treated at the Blair E. Batson Hospital," she said.
Scott asked a fourteen year old with a closing aorta, "What are you thinking before surgery?"
He replied, "I just think and pray and get real nervous. I just don't want to go through the doors."
The radiothon will go continue Thursday and Friday, 6 a.m. to 6 p.m..
