Thanks to Schools for Sharing and Caring

It would be impossible to say thank you to everyone who donated their time and money to John & Friends Run for Cancer and its cause, the Anderson Regional Cancer Center Patient Benevolence Fund.

But some of the most unique contributions came from area schools. Administrators say they got behind the campaign because all the money went to help cancer patients with treatment costs not covered by insurance.

"There are people out there who have cancer and don't have the funds available to do the things that they need to do to get to the doctor or get to the treatment center or maybe to get something to eat," said Cynthia Windham, a teacher at Parkview Elementary, "And I think that's great that that money is there for them and that you guys do that, that they can know it's there and depend on it."

Staff and faculty at area schools stepped up to help during our Wear Your Tennis Shoes to Work Day, where you donated $5 to the fund in return for being able to wear sneakers.

But faculty also came up with unique ideas to raise money, including wearing lots of pink. And there was a bake sale at Southeast Middle School. A group of student broadcasters at Northeast Elementary gave us a shout-out on their morning announcements.

"We thought it would help the people that had cancer and stuff like that,"
said Carrie Grace Baty of Northeast Elementary.

"We started and we had this idea that we should do a bake sale and so we did," said James Gibson, president of the SE Middle Beta Club. "We made a list of all the different kind of baked goods and things and we put people by different cookies and things, and so we just had an idea and it just worked out."

The community support was overwhelming and we can't thank everyone individually. But to everyone who was a part of this year's Run for Cancer, thank you.

According to Anderson Cancer Center officials, John & Friends Run for Cancer ended up raising $8500 for the benevolence fund.
