Parent Asks for Schools to Close Temporarily

Some parents in Choctaw County, Ala., are calling for schools to be closed so that they can be sanitized due to several cases of the H1N1 virus, or swine flu, surfacing there.

"I will not send her back until they sanitize the school," said parent Sierra Dubose, who has a 5-year-old daughter diagnosed with swine flu late last week.

"I'm saying, 'can they shut it down for one day?' That's all I'm saying," Dubose said Monday.

However, at this point school superintendent Sue Moore says that will not happen.

"We are not having a trend or pattern here of a need to close schools," Moore said. "We had about two or three cases in each of the schools and at one school no cases of fever on Friday."

With about 1900 students in the district's four schools, Moore says each school is sanitized daily and that the district is now gearing up to receive H1N1 vaccinations, starting next month, that will be offered free to students.

"We take it very seriously," said Moore. "Our children are the most important thing that we have. And if there was a reason for alarm, that we needed to close our schools, we would definitely do that. But right now we're seeing a really good attendance rate at our schools."

The state of Alabama has reported more than 2,100 total cases of the swine flu. Eight people have died from it.

The state does not report specific county numbers, so it's not know exactly how many cases have surfaced in Choctaw County.

Do you think it's necessary to close schools in order for them to be sanitized against the swine flu?

It's so sad that the budget for education has been slashed so much that custodians do not have adequate supplies to keep the schools clean anymore. Oftentimes, there is no toilet paper, soap or paper towels in restrooms. With the current outbreak of swine flu, it should be every school's priority to keep teachers and students healthy.

The school(s) are not being clean well. There is any soap in the children bathroom. You don't smell any kind of cleaning solution. You know why ,because they don't have any money to buy any supplies.Several schools have 1 janitor(ones out sick and the other one comes in at night),so all day long one side of the school doesn't get clean until night.I heard this from a teacher.
