With the arrival of football season and temperatures still soaring, health officials are concerned about injuries, and dehydration, among athletes.
Dr. Walt Willis, Emergency Director for Rush Health Systems, says it is vitally important not just to get players the immediate care they need, but to follow up and make sure they don't start playing again too soon.
The probability of a more serious injury skyrockets if an athlete returns to the field while he is still feeling the symptoms of a concussion.
"It's very hard to hold them out they are motivated to play ball," says Willis, "but the parents, and the coaches, and the physicians step in and say..it's safer for you not to play."
Another big health concern for players this time of year is dehydration, Willis says players need to drink at least 20 ounces of fluid before practice or a game, and then drink fluids every 20 minutes after that.
