Internet Education

At some time in the future, students will be able to earn an Associate's Degree entirely through the use of the Internet. Meridian Community College's Director of Distance Learning had that message for Meridian Rotarians Monday.

Hubert Yates said the typical distance learning student is a young, married woman with children, who works full-time.

"We've got students who go to class at 2:00 in the morning," said Yates. "We've got other students who go to class at 8 or 9:00 in the morning, after they've gotten the kids off to go to school. You know that type of thing. It really fits the students' schedule, becoming much more student-centered."

Yates said community colleges pool their resources and share course offerings. He said education using the Internet is being widely accepted.
