Chance Sues Parole Board

A Montgomery judge says he will issue a ruling in two weeks about a lawsuit that one of Alabama's best-known inmates has filed against the State Parole Board.

Phillip Chance maintains the board acted unfairly when it voted to give him a parole in 1999 and then reversed the decision after getting a critical letter from Gov. Don Siegelman.

Chance escaped from an Alabama prison work farm in 1981 while serving a life sentence for the capital murder of Walter Drinkard.

He was not returned to Alabama until 1996. Officials in the state of Michigan had refused to extradite him because he lived a model life there for 15 years. Chance claimed the justice system in Alabama was unfair to him.
