Some positive reaction to President Bush's speech came from Europe. There was also praise from some Democrats here in the U.S., on the case the president made for military action against Saddam Hussein. The speech produced a more cautious reaction from Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle. But Minority Leader Trent Lott of Mississippi was solidly with President Bush.

"It was obvious that he is committed to dealing with this very serious threat," said Lott. "And now I think it's vital for the congress to show the world that we back this president and will give him the authority he needs to protect the American people and the world community."

"If the removal of Saddam creates even greater instability, we may have defeated our purpose," said Daschle. "Now, I'm not suggesting that that's what would happen. But I think we have to be very careful about thinking through the repercussions of this action from that perspective."

The U.S. and the other permanent Security Council members are working on a resolution setting a deadline for Iraq to let weapons inspectors back into that country.
