Momentum Mississippi Committee Announced

Gov. Haley Barbour Wednesday announced the members of Momentum Mississippi at the group’s first-ever meeting. The new organization was created to help formulate a long-range economic development plan for the state.

Anthony Topazi, President of Mississippi Power Company, will lead the broad-based group that has members from every region of the state. The group met in Jackson to begin work on recommendations.

“This influential group can help build the partnerships necessary to create more and better jobs in Mississippi,” said Barbour.

The Momentum Mississippi team will be comprised of a Special Task Force and several regional and issue committees.

Board of directors members include:

  • Wade Jones, president of the East Mississippi Business Development Corporation in Meridian
  • Jimmy Alexander of Lauderdale and A & B Electric Company, Inc.
  • Bill Freeman of Newton and Newton County Bank
  • Charles Holder of Jasper County and Hol-Mac Corporation
  • Bubba Hudspeth of Winston County, an entrepreneur
  • Chief Phillip Martin of the Mississippi band of Choctaw Indians
  • Lamar McDonald of Meridian and Meyer and Rosenbaum Insurance
  • Manny Mitchell of Meridian and Mitchell Distributing
  • Peyton Self of Quitman, a farmer
  • C.D. Smith of Lauderdale County, regional manager of BellSouth
  • Mayor John Robert Smith of Meridian
  • Bill Yates of Neshoba County and Yates Construction

The group will start with Blueprint Mississippi’s recommendations, crafted by state business and higher education leaders and the Mississippi Economic Council.
