Gov. Haley Barbour says a forum in Tupelo Tuesday will examine early childhood education in Mississippi. The seminar is designed to bring together public, private and parochial day care and child care organizations and Head Start centers. The groups will discuss ideas to bolster early childhood education.

Barbour said he is interested in alternatives to programs that would need massive funding. To better prepare children to attend school, the governor said he will seek to create incentives for private and parochial child care organizations.

Founders of the Center for Research on Children in the United State, Craig and Sharon Ramey will give the keynote presentation. The two are experts in the effects early experiences have on children's intellectual and social competence.

The Tupelo forum is the second in a series of four education gatherings organized by the governor. Barbour met with a newly selected Teacher Advisory Council last week and will hold a program on teaching quality Oct. 18 during the National Governors Association meeting in Biloxi.
