A one-vehicle mishap on Interstate 20/59 early Friday afternoon claimed the life of the driver, James Devon Black, 30, of York, Ala.
The Ford Explorer was traveling eastbound when witnesses said a tire blew and the SUV hit the median and flipped several times. The driver was ejected.
"When I made the call to 911, I did a follow up call to let them understand the real severity of this and they got somebody on out," said Henry Granger, an eyewitness.
"I believe his vehicle had a blowout on the rear and it contributed to the accident," said State Trooper Andrew Emerson.
The tread on the left rear tire was completely stripped away.
The female passenger had to be freed from the vehicle. Sheila Emerson was taken to Rush Hospital in serious but stable condition.
Toomsuba volunteers and Meridian Rescue responded to the call.
