Children First: Lending a Helping Hand

Agencies that help the needy in our community need your assistance to complete the task.

The Salvation Army is meeting the needs of the poor in Lauderdale and surrounding counties. For instance, its Angel Tree Adoption program allows you to choose a specific child from the Angel Tree at Bonita Lakes Mall.

You may sign up to provide clothing, shoes, and new toys for a needy child. You'll find the information you need to make the right purchases displayed on cards hung on the tree. Gifts should be returned unwrapped to the Salvation Army for delivery to that child.

The Wesley House also serves families in need with food and toys and also provides toys for foster children in a ten county area. It receives thousands of requests each season. Toys and goodies are needed for young people up to age 18; for families.... turkeys, hams and hens, canned food, fruit and candy.

Wesley House is also WTOK's partner in Coats for Kids. For the past 16 years, this effort has sought to get new and used coats in good condition to children who need one to stay warm.

Coats may be brought to WTOK at the corner of 23rd Avenue and 9th Street or to the Wesley House at 1520 8th Avenue in Meridian.
