The Salvation Army has opened a new soup kitchen in Meridian, to help the hungry and homeless.

The new ministry is located at 710 B Street. Planning for it has taken place over the past year, with assistance of the Riley Foundation and several Meridian businesses.

"Certainly we're better prepared to service the people in the area who need our help from time to time," said Capt. Joe Mure', commander of the Meridian Salvation Army office. "But also we're better prepared in case of an emergency of a larger sort like a hurricane where we have evacuations to this area. We can serve a lot more people through this kitchen facility."

Capt. Mure' described the previous facility as sub-standard.

The Salvation Army in Meridian serves more than 6,000 meals to the needy every year.
