Federal health officials say they will probably start screening all blood donations for West Nile virus as soon as a test is developed.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says it appears the virus can survive in donated blood and be spread through blood transfusions.
The first human cases of West Nile in Mississippi were verified this week in Lauderdale and Neshoba counties.
