The shooting happened at 335 Riser Road just outside Newton around 2 o'clock Monday afternoon.
Upon arrival, emergency responders say they found the victim shot once in the abdomen. The weapon used was a 12 gauge shot gun. They say he was later pronounced dead at Newton Regional Hospital.
The victim was 64-year-old Robert Pace who lived down the street from where the shooting happened. Forty-six-year-old David Grafree has been charged in the shooting. When it happened investigators say Grafree was at a friend's house.
"Mr. Pace, from all accounts, went walking past the house on the road. One said something to the other and Mr. Pace wound up in the yard with Mr. Grafree. An altercation took place and Mr. Pace was shot," says Sheriff Jackie Knight.
Sheriff Knight says the shooting was the result of an ongoing argument between the two men.
"From all accounts the argument has been back and forth for a couple of weeks now. I don't really know what started it. I don't really know what it's about. It just came to a tragic end."
At last check Grafree remained in the Newton County Jail on $500,000 bond. Investigators say no other arrests are expected.
