The U.S. Supreme Court has refused to hear an appeal of the Ayers lawsuit.
In 1975 the lawsuit was filed by Jake Ayers who sued the state alleging that Mississippi had been neglecting its black universities for decades. Plaintiffs had appealed the $503 million settlement calling it unfair.
The nation's high court has now rejected that claim. With this latest ruling, funds that had been stalled because of the appeal will now be available to Jackson State, Alcorn and Mississippi Valley State Universities.
