Local members of the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve kicked off their annual Toys for Tots campaign this weekend.
Last year more than 7,000 toys were collected locally for needy children. All went to more than 1200 children from the surrounding area. This year's goal is to collect even more.
"We have collected about 100 toys thus far and we help people continue to drop them off," says Dawlat Vesastegui, who is the local associate coordinator for Toys for Tots.
The toy drive will be going on through December 11. Toys R' Us' Geoffrey’s is teaming up with the campaign as a national sponsor.
"If you don't want to bring a toy by you can make a toy donation at the register for $1, $5, or $10," says local Geoffrey's store director.
"Everyone is concerned about the war but we don't just fight wars we are also trying to help children and people right here at home in need as well," says Vesastegui.
For those who would like to take part in the campaign you can drop off new unwrapped toys at participating businesses. For more information or location sites call (601) 679-3356.
