Meridian's mayor has vetoed a city council ordinance that banned smoking in public places, such as restaurants and bars.
In a veto order, Mayor John Robert Smith said the language in the ordinance was too general, and all the issues were not addressed in a public hearing this week.
Smith said he'd like for a group comprised of the Hotel-Restaurant Association, American Cancer Society and the city council to seek middle ground.
It would take four votes of the city council to override the veto. Two of the five-member voted against passing the ordinance, Dr. George Thomas and Jesse Palmer. Both said previously they would not vote to override.
