Events related to the commemoration of Dr. Martin Luther King Day will start Thursday.

Thursday, Jan. 13, 11:00 a.m. at Meridian Community College's McCain Theatre:

Saturday, Jan. 15, 7:00 p.m. at Temple Theatre Ballroom:
The Dr. Martin Luther King Celebration Committee Annual Scholarship Gala.
Tickets: $20.00
Music will be provided by The Unlimited of Jackson, Miss.

Sunday, Jan. 16, 6:00 p.m. at Martin Luther King Drive and 15th Street:
Interdenominational Ministerial Alliance Annual Candlelight March-Program follows at First Union Baptist Church, 610 38th Avenue in Meridian

Monday, Jan. 17, 8:00 a.m. at the Boys and Girls Club:
Meridian-Lauderdale County NAACP 20th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Breakfast, Featuring the Rev. Paul Garrett, pastor of New Prospect Baptist Church in Meridian

Monday, Jan. 17, 12 Noon in downtown Meridian:
6th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Parade
Special guest: Alcorn State University Band

"The purpose was to generate enthusiasm from the public to come out to each event, and by hosting a press conference which has never been done, we hope to get more participation during the Martin Luther King weekend,” said Randy Hopson, public relations coordinator for the Dr. Martin Luther King Celebration Committee.
