GOP Sues Over Campaign Law

The Mississippi Republican Party has filed a federal lawsuit over a state campaign finance bill that it views as unconstitutional.

Adopted by the state legislature in 1999, the law bars political parties from making contributions and openly supporting judicial candidates.

State chairman Jim Herring said the law prevents parties from taking active roles, while allowing other groups to do so. Herring said it shouldn't be just trial lawyers and business groups endorsing candidates.
