Mississippi's revenue collection for the first six months of the fiscal year exceeded estimates, but lawmakers said the growth is not enough to pull the state out of its budget crisis.

Year-to-date revenue growth is 1.3 percent over the estimate for the current fiscal year.

From July to December, the state collected $21.7 million more than estimated in sales taxes, corporate income, insurance premiums and other revenue.

House Appropriations Chairman Johnny Stringer said he isn't encouraged by the figures. He says the growth needs to be 20 percent to help the state's budget situation.

State agencies have requested $624.1 million more than the $3. 8 billion that will be available to spend in the fiscal year that starts July 1.
