In the thick, morning fog, the USS Kidd towered over hundreds as family and friends gathered at Northrop Grumman Ship Systems to christen the 24th Aegis guided missile destroyer built in Pascagoula.

It is the third U.S. Navy destroyer named for Medal of Honor and Purple Heart recipient Rear Admiral Isaac Kidd, Sr., the first flag officer killed onboard the USS Arizona at Pearl Harbor.

The 9,300-ton vessel possesses the most powerful weapons system in the fleet of Aegis destroyers, which allows the ship to fight air, surface and underwater battles simultaneously.

Another tradition was reestablished Saturday when Kidd's granddaughters, Regina Wolbarsht and Mary Corrinne Plumer, acted as sponsors and christened the ship.

Kidd's widow, Inez, christened the first ship named for her husband in 1943. Their daughter, Marie Angelique Smith, christened the second in 1979.
