Mississippi's unemployment rate dropped to 6.2 percent in August, the lowest rate of the year.

The unemployment rate was 6.5 percent in July, and 7.4 percent in June. The National Unadjusted Unemployment Rate for August was 5.7 percent.

The Mississippi Employment Security Commission released the figures Friday.

MESC officials say much of the improvement is due to a regular cycle of education and agriculture workers returning to their fall jobs.

MESC executive director, Curt Thompson, says Mississippi had 17 counties with double-digit unemployment rates. They were led by Clarke County, which had an unemployment rate of 17.8 percent.

The lowest rate of 3.1 percent was in Rankin County, followed by Lamar County with a rate of 3.4 percent.
