Meridian police this weekend charged Edmond Burton, 25, with murder in the death of 23-year-old Germaine Martin. The victim was found Jan.11 on North Lakeland Drive, just off Highway 80 West. Martin had been shot in the head.
According to Lt. Dean Harper, more charges could be brought against Burton.
"At this time it's possible that the motive was robbery. The case is still under investigation. Therefore, additional charges could be pending," Harper said.
If robbery or some other crime were connected to the shooting, Burton could be charged with capital murder, which carries a stiffer penalty than murder, upon conviction, but based on the murder charge alone, Burton's bond was set at $50,000.
"Based off information we received from some tips that came in and also some of the evidence that was recovered. We also have evidence still at the crime lab that we're awaiting test results on," Harper said.
At the time Martin's body was discovered, officials said it appeared he might have been shot about 12 hours earlier.
