Emmy award-winning actress Sela Ward and civil rights activist, the Reverend Will Campbell, were recognized for their artistic excellence and contributions to the state.
The Governor's Awards for Excellence in the Arts are bestowed by the Mississippi Arts Commission.
Ward received the artistic excellence honoree. The Meridian native expressed support for education of the arts in the school system.
Campbell is an Amite County native and author of 17 books. He received a lifetime achievement award.
It's the 17th year the Mississippi Arts Commission honored state natives for their artistic services.
