Meridian's mayor announced Tuesday that he's running for a fourth term.

At a news conference, John Robert Smith said he's working hard for the future of Meridian.

"Each generation has believed Meridian could be more than she is, yet we haven't capitalized on it. This time I think the collective will and the collective vision is now there to become who we've always believed we were," Smith said.

Smith, a Republican, served on the Meridian City Council prior to being elected to his first term in 1993.

Two others have already qualified for the office. Retired businessman Wally Hudnall is running as a Republican. District 2 Lauderdale County supervisor Jimmie Smith is in the race on the Democratic ticket.
