The Asbury Foundation of Hattiesburg, Incorporated, committed $1 million for a new scholarship program Thursday at the University of Mississippi.

Representatives of the university say this scholarship will attract more people to attend Ole Miss.

"The Ole Miss First Program is based on the fact that we are a family and the responsibility of family is to educate their children," said Dr. Gloria Kellum of the University of Mississippi. "They may be our own children or the children within the state of Mississippi. And so the Asbury Foundation has provided us with this million dollar resource that will allow us to provide that kind of family support for the education."

The Asbury Foundation supports health and quality of life programs in the Hattiesburg region.

The scholarships will be awarded based on financial need, academic merit and leadership.
