Dr. William J. Anderson, III, president and chairman of the board at Jeff Anderson Regional Medical Center, died Thursday morning. Anderson was 71.

Dr. Anderson retired in 1998, after serving as a general surgeon at Anderson Hospital for 36 years.

He was the grandson of the late Dr. Jeff Anderson, who founded the hospital in 1928, and the Son of Dr. William J. Anderson, Jr.

The marquee at Anderson Hospital displayed a message of farewell to "Dr. Bill." The flag flew at half-staff in his memory.
