McRae Gets Dual Opposition
The three candidates for the Mississippi Supreme Court post from south Mississippi have spent $1.4 million. That's according to campaign finance reports filed through Oct. 26.
Gulfport attorney, Jess Dickinson---who campaigned in Quitman Thursday--leads in both spending and contributions.
It's nearly double that of incumbent presiding Justice Chuck McRae, who is running for a third eight-year term.
Dickinson told Newscenter 11 why he got in the race.
"Having the opportunity to see where the practice of law has moved in this state, I got quite concerned about the fact that our supreme court has lost respect," said Dickinson. "People are afraid of it. People do not believe they're going to get justice from our court system. And I knew that if somebody didn't run against my opponent, Chuck McRae, he would be our chief justice."
The third candidate, Chancery Judge Larry Buffington of Collins, trails the other two in donations and spending.
Buffington is running for re-election as a chancery judge at the same time he's seeking the supreme court seat.
