Inmate Dies at EMCF

The Lauderdale County Sheriff's Department is investigating the second suspicious inmate death since August at the East Mississippi Correctional Facility at Lost Gap.

An inmate died overnight, apparently at the hand of his cellmate. However, the names of both are withheld, pending notification of the victim's family.

No charge has been filed and the case will go to the March Grand Jury.

"There will be an autopsy to determine the actual cause of death," said Lauderdale County Sheriff Billy Sollie. "A visual examination of the body, there were indications of a possible strangulation. But again, that was simply a physical extremity view of the body. The body will be transported to Jackson for an autopsy with a cause of death being determined at that point."

The victim was serving time for burglary and grand larceny. His cellmate was serving a life sentence for rape.
