The head of Greene County's struggling school system has been placed on paid leave after State School Superintendent Ed Richardson accused her of providing his office with false financial information.
The Greene County Board voted Monday to relieve Superintendent Carol Morrow of her duties for 30 days. Her salary is nearly $90,000 a year.
Charging that Morrow had given the state misleading false financial statements, Richardson called for an audit by state examiners. Morrow said nothing at the meeting. She has denied any mismanagement.
The Greene County system, one of Alabama's poorest, is facing a $1.2 million.
The Alabama state school board authorized Superintendent Richardson to take over the 1,750-student system earlier this month.
Richardson has appointed former Lowndes County Superintendent Eli Seaborn to oversee the system's finances. The county board named Seaborn acting superintendent.
