City officials and residents of north Meridian gathered Monday to officially open the valves on the new one million gallon water tank on Highway 39 North.

The tank was built at a cost of $1.26 million and is designed to increase water pressure.

"Today, we not only satisfied the present need of residents here in north Meridian with adequate water pressure and good fresh, not only drinking water but commercial water," said Mayor John Robert Smith. "But we position ourselves for the future growth that we know is going to come in this part of north Meridian."

The contractor for the project was Caldwell tanks. The company began the project in December 2001.
