Local OB-GYN Dr. Ronnye Purvis spoke to a group on hormone replacement therapy Thursday at Anderson's Hospital.

Dr. Purvis said there are certain symptoms women should have in order to be placed on this type of therapy.

"Women need to be placed on hormone replacement therapy for those women who are having severe symptoms, hot flashes, night sweats, irritability and their quality of life is strongly affected," said Dr. Purvis. "If you are not having any of these problems, then there are other alternatives. You may treat the local symptoms, for instance, vaginal dryness. And also just protect the bones. There's other agents on the market today that can help protect bones that does not have any hormonal components."

There are many options available for women today. If you are having any of these symptoms, Dr. Purvis advises you to consult your physician.
