Lauderdale County Sheriff Billy Sollie told county supervisors Thursday he wants to install 81 new cameras in the jail.
If approved, it would replace 35 old cameras that record to VHS and add more cameras in other areas.
"One of our major concerns is the liability issue. We have a number of blind spots throughout the facility that doesn't provide us with the opportunity to document assaults or misconduct by the inmates themselves," said Sollie. "We have a number of areas that, when the building was being constructed, the county just didn't have the funds to put cameras."
The estimated cost of the upgrade would be between $100,000 and $150,000.
