Riley-Siegelman Race

With revised vote totals reported from Baldwin County, apparently giving Republican Cong. Bob Riley victory over Democrat Gov. Don Siegelman, the battle for Alabama's top office now turns to the certification process.

Siegelman maintains that county election canvassing boards should
not rush to certify the county results like Baldwin County did Wednesday. The governor also said state law requires county canvassing boards to certify their results Friday and then report them to the secretary of state in Montgomery.

Secretary of State Jim Bennett and Riley's campaign both say that Friday is a deadline. But both also said if counties have a pattern and practice of certifying the official results earlier, it is legal under state law.

The canvassing board in Baldwin County certified results showing the correct number for Siegelman at 12,736, not the 19,070 initially reported by county officials on election night.
