Legislature Tackles Budget

Mississippi lawmakers could not find a way to fund state government before a budget-writing deadline Saturday, but they made a technical move to gave themselves more time to work.

House and Senate negotiators filed so-called "dummy" budget bills with figures they know will be changed in the next few days. Work on the budget continued Sunday.

Leading lawmakers started working last fall on a proposed $3.8 billion budget. They entered the final days of talks with nearly half a billion dollars more in spending requests than the state has money to fill.

One of the biggest unresolved issues is how much to spend on public education. The House has proposed spending more than the Senate.
